Compassion-Focussed EMDR Therapy:
Treatment of Moral Injury & Shame-Based Trauma
Overview: In this two day interactive workshop Derek brings depth of knowledge and compassion to the complexities of working with moral injury and shame-based trauma. Derek will explore the core components of moral injury and shame-based trauma using the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) paradigm and evolutionary biology as a critical lens. Moral injury is the psychological distress resulting from events and expereinces that transgress an individual's moral or ethical beliefs. Compassion-focused EMDR is an emerging treatment approach for individuals experiencing moral injury. The approach integrates EMDR with compassion-focused techniques that specifically conceptualises and targets the shame, guilt, and self-criticism often associated with moral injury/trauma.
Derek will highlight that many of the symptoms experienced by traumatised individuals are not sufficiently captured by the existing ICD-11/DSM 5 criterion for PTSD, specifically when individulas present with symptoms of shame, guilt, loneliness, social isolation, fear of recrimination, and moral injury. Conceptualising and healing from these specific wounds associated with moral injury/ is increasingly essential. In this workshop Derek aims to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively apply Compassion-Focused EMDR in the treatment of moral injury and shame-based trauma. Individual and political case studies will be utilised to assist the integration of theory/practice and exploring broader concepts. By integrating principles from EMDR and compassion-focused therapy, clinicians can feel equipt to offer holistic and compassionate care to individuals struggling with the aftermath of moral transgressions and self-condemnation.

1. Participants will consider the core components of Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) and evolutionary biology, and how these models apply to more vulnerable and complex populations with a specific focus on moral injury and shame-based trauma
2. Participants will explore various theoretical frameworks to explain the trauma landscape of the client’s lived experience through a moral, and compassion-focussed lens
3. Consideration of broader aspects, including compassionate leadership, politics and morality within the ‘trauma industry’, and the importance of compassionate self-care in working with complex, vulnerable, trauma populations.
4. Engagement in problem-based learning to integrate theoretical, empirical, and clinical case examples of moral injury and shame-based trauma to enhance the theory-practice interface and knowledge exchange.
